Winners From The
Blue

Born at Claibourne Farm Kentucky in 1977. He was sold for 1.3 Million dollars to Stavros
Niarchos. Who named him after the famous Russian ballet star Rudolph Nureyev.
This is a classic story of
overcoming the odds. He sustained an injury in1987 where he normally would
have been euthanasiad
Nureyev had three starts on the racetrack
for three wins but in his final start he was disqualified in the 1980 2000 Guineas for causing interference. It
was his stud career which was to bring fame and fortune to his owners. Even
with the fertility problems he was still able to produce 761 live foals to
continue his dynasty.
He
fractured his off hind leg below the hock in 1987 and was nursed back to
health by Dr. J.D Howard and the staff at his home Walmac Stud from then on
he had a stall of his own. It was his breeding barn as he was unable to be
put into the paddock due to this injury. The barn was a photo gallery showing
all the stages of his recovery from this severe injury. From 19 crops of
racing age, Nureyev is represented by 128 stakes winners including 71 graded
winners. His five champions include 1987 champion grass horse Theatrical
(Ire) and multiple international champion Miesque.
MIESQUE
King
Mambos Mum
Sometimes greatness is measured in neither
dollar amounts, nor minutes and seconds. Sometimes it’s measured in good
old-fashioned heart and class, virtues which can be only be estimated by
circumstance and, often, sheer luck. Other times, greatness can be measured
in an athlete’s ability to perform at his or her best consistently. But whatever
method you measure greatness by, a bay mare named Miesque is a cut-above the
rest.
With purse earnings exceeding $2 million, she is among the leading
money-earning fillies and mares in the world. Winner of the Breeders' Cup
Mile in both 1987 and 1988 with winning times rivaling some of the fastest in
the history of the race, this mare held multiple Championships in France,
England, and America, and in 1987, she was voted for Championships in all
three countries in a single season.
Making her even more extraordinary is that, unlike many other great race
mares before her, Miesque did something quite unexpected when she retired:
she became every bit as awesome a broodmare as she’d been on the track.
Miesque’s first foal is G1 Stakes winner and formidable sire Kingmambo who,
with an Average Earnings Index of 3.42 (which is very high when one considers
that Native Dancer’s AEI was only 3.15), is the sire of such great horses as
Lemon Drop Kid (Winner of the Belmont, Travers, and Futurity Stakes, among many
others, and who is a leading contender for the Breeders’ Cup this year),
Champion (Japan) El Condor Pasa, and other stakes winners.
After Kingmambo, Miesque continued to produce quality foals; she is also the
dam of G1 Champion 3-year-old Miler and stakes producer East of the Moon (dam
of G3 Moon Driver), G3 Stakes winner and sire Miesque’s Son, and Stakes
winner Moon Is Up, and with the exception of 1995, she has produced a foal
every year since she retired; she is currently believed to be in foal by Storm
Cat. Most recently, a weanling colt sired by A.P. Indy was born this past
spring who will surely to be another great representation of Miesque’s unique
ability to reproduce the steadfastness which made her a legend in her own
time.
His
progeny, which have earned $70,188,401 include Group 1 winner Crystal
Music. At the start of his stud career because of the fertility problem they
had a battle obtaining mares at the right times but the product was class
with a capital C. He produced an amazing 18 percent stakes winners to foals
even his three part brother Sadlers Wells could’nt match this. Every foal
that hit the ground was a precious gift.He sired over 100 stakes winners. Its
another area that he stands out in as the sire of well over 100 stakes winners
with his siring of broodmares. He was never considered a sire of sires until
recently.

Finally his sons are coming to the party, stallions like Fasliyev who
holds the world record for number of two year old winners from his first
crop. Stravinsky, Soviet Star and Spinnning World are all starting to
produce. Theatrical is producing for him in the southern hemisphere with over
60 stakes winners and of course horse of the year Peintre Celebre is
producing in both hemispheres.
Nureyev died on the 29th October 2001 at the age of 24. The dynasty continues and he will be
regarded in the future as one of the top stallions of the past century. Champion
and leading sire Nureyev died at John T. L. Jones Jr.’s Walmac International
near Lexington, approximately a month after a surgical procedure to remove a
cancerous tumor in his right front foot.
Stravinsky
Cambridge Stud's shuttle stallion Stravinsky continues to prove
himself as an international sire.
Chinese Dragon, the exciting colt by the Nureyev stallion, has won his third
stakes race in the USA.
The win came in the $US86,875 Alcatraz Breeders Cup Stakes (1600m) on turf for three-year-olds
on Sunday.
It was his fourth win in succession in California, and his fifth win overall.
Trained by Bob Hess, and ridden by Corey Nakatani, Chinese Dragon settled in
behind the pace before taking the lead over the final 200m to win by a
comprehensive one and three quarter lengths.
The time was 1.37.00 on the firm track.
Chinese Dragon, out of the Alydar mare Fabulous Fairy, was bred by Ben
Sangster and the colt now has the impressive record of five wins from just
six race starts.
Racing for Carter Hale Jr and the Roncelli Family Trust Chinese Dragon has
previously won the Santa Anita Pasadena Stakes and the La Puenta Stakes and
he has earned stakes of $US217,182.
Stravinsky, standing this season at Cambridge Stud for $35,000, plus gst - as usual for this
international stallion - had winners elsewhere around the globe over the past
week.
Flemington trainer Michael Moroney produced the two-year-old colt Straddle
(NZ) (ex Shariat, by Zabeel) to win over 1230m at Geelong on Sunday.
Pe Quente (USA) (ex Bemissed, by Nijinsky) won over 1200m at Delaware Park,
USA, on Saturday, and Soldier’s Tale (USA) (ex Myrtle, by Batshoof) won by a
neck over 1200m at York, England, on Friday.
On Wednesday three-year-old filly Bristol Lane (USA) (ex Energical, by
Affirmed) demolished a field of fillies and mares by two and a quarter
lengths over 1800m at Belmont Park, USA, and the well-bred two-year-old
Single Trac (ex Singalong, by Danasinga) won the juvenile race over 1200m at
Dargaville.
Meanwhile Stravinsky is third on the Australian Sires list for sires with
their second crop racing.
Furthermore, he is second on the list behind Redoute’s Choice based on sires
remaining that are available to Australasian breeders.
NUREYEV DEAD
The death of the 24-year-old
son of Northern Dancer, who can easily be considered one of the world’s most
influential stallions over the past two decades.,He laid down and died in his
stall at the farm and was buried at Walmac.
The backbone of Walmac’s breeding
program, Nureyev battled a variety of physical ailments over the past decade. Jones
said the loss of the stallion would reverberate around the world and that
Nureyev "was a pretty darn important horse."
Keep an eye on King
Charlemagne my tip for the next top Nureyev stallion.
